Model configuration
Configure the extraction strategy, extraction model, language support, layout parsing, attribution method, and overrides of a Flow Extract node.
Overview
The model configuration of an Extract node defines how the node processes documents and which LLM it uses to extract data.
Configuring the model
You can configure the underlying LLM as well as its settings in the Model configuration section of the Definition tab as follows:
-
In the Flow canvas, hover over the Extract node.
-
In the toolbar that appears, select Open full view. The Definition tab opens.
-
Expand Model configuration.
-
From the Extraction strategy dropdown list, select the extraction method used to understand and process the document:
- Standard - The default option. Processes the document in a single pass, with layout and OCR pre-processing.
- Advanced - Splits the document across multiple passes, with layout and OCR pre-processing. This option is best suited for documents past a few hundred pages, or for documents that require a large number of field values.
Note:When you select Advanced, the Attribution setting is no longer displayed.
-
From the Extraction model dropdown list, select the underlying LLM used for extraction:
- gpt-4o
- gpt-5.1-2025-11-13 (preview)
- gpt-5.4-2026-03-05 (preview)
- Gemini 2.5 Flash
- Gemini 2.5 Pro (preview)
- Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview (preview)
- Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite (preview)
For more details, refer to Choosing the most suitable model, Switching from one model to another, and Document processing limits.
Note:You can run these models on your own LLM subscriptions instead of the UiPath LLM subscriptions. For details, refer to Bring your own subscription (BYOS).
-
Optionally, under Advanced settings, from the Language support dropdown list, select Latin-based languages or Extended languages. You can also keep the Auto-detect option. For more details, refer to Language support.
-
From the Layout parsing dropdown list, select None or Full. For more details, refer to Layout parsing.
-
From the Attribution dropdown list, select Rules-based or Model-based. This setting is available only for the Standard extraction strategy. For more details, refer to Attribution.
-
Optionally, if the Overrides setting is available, enter the overrides in JSON format. For more details, refer to Overrides.
-
Select Save.
Result: The Extract node uses the new model configuration.
Choosing the most suitable model
Different models perform differently for different use cases, but Gemini is recommended where possible.
GPT-4o has a restriction of 50 pages.
Gemini 2.5 Flash can process documents in IXP up to 500 pages in a single call, with higher page counts supported in preview. The Gemini limit may vary slightly based on the density of the document.
In terms of field values, Gemini 2.5 Flash has a higher output context window, which allows it to handle more field values than GPT-4o. There is no fixed limit on the number of field values per document. The limit depends on the model, and it may vary depending on the complexity of the document.
Models that do not return log probabilities always return a confidence value of 1.0 for all predicted values. If a field is not extracted at all by the model, it returns a confidence value of 0 instead. These behaviors affect the following models, which are expected to behave this way while in preview:
- Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview
- Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite
- gpt-5.4-2026-03-05
Switching from one model to another
To switch from one model to another, select a model from the Extraction model dropdown list, and then select Save.
This creates a new node version. To get predictions from the new model, select Refresh predictions in the annotation view of each document. You can also refresh predictions for multiple documents at once, or run an evaluation on all or multiple documents.
For mature models, taxonomies, particularly instructions, and confirmed predictions, particularly for inferred fields, are typically optimized for one model type over the other. It is likely that after switching, performance scores can drop, as some iteration on instructions and re-reviewing predictions may be required to undo model-specific optimizations that may be impacting the performance of the other model.
If you need to switch the model for performance reasons, check first whether the alternative model can solve the core problem that the current model cannot solve. If it can, optimize the new model to improve its evaluation metrics.
Document processing limits
There is no fixed limit on the number of field values that IXP can extract per document. The limit depends on the extraction model.
If a document requires more field values than the model can return, the model may reach its token limit. This can happen even if the document is well within the page limits listed in this section. If you reach this limit, set the Extraction strategy to Advanced, if it is available to you, to handle more field values.
If token limits are exceeded, predictions may be incomplete or empty regardless of the number of pages. For example, an 80-page document with 1,400 extracted field values may trigger a token-limit warning in the user interface. At runtime, when the token limit is exceeded, the API response will show this by returning occurrence and extraction confidence values of 0.
If page limits are exceeded, only the pages within the specified limits below are processed. Both of these behaviors apply to both Gemini and GPT-4o.
Runtime limits include:
- Number of pages per document:
- For Gemini, up to 500 pages.
- For GPT-4o, 50 pages.
- Token limits - Data-heavy documents with more than 200 field values, such as lengthy tables, will likely reach the token limit. Gemini has a higher output token limit by default, so it can return a larger number of field values in a single call.
Language support
The Language support setting defines which alphabets the OCR is optimized to recognize before extraction. If your documents use any non-Latin scripts, select Extended languages.
The available options are:
- Auto-detect - Automatically selects the appropriate OCR for the document.
- Latin-based languages - Optimized for documents in Latin-alphabet languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
- Extended languages - Optimized for documents in non-Latin alphabets, with support for Latin alphabets for mixed datasets.
You can upload documents and build models in any language that is well-supported by the selected extraction model. The set of supported languages depends on the model that you select.
Extraction accuracy can vary depending on the language of your documents. Results may be less consistent for languages such as:
- Arabic
- Chinese
- Hebrew
- Korean
For these languages, you should validate model performance on a representative sample of your documents before moving to production.
Layout parsing
The Layout parsing setting is an optional step that reconstructs document layouts and passes them to the model, to improve extraction performance on documents with tables or complex layouts. This step adds latency to each document.
The available options are:
- None - Processes documents directly, without layout reconstruction. This option has a lower latency.
- Full - Reconstructs the full page layout, including tables, forms, and free text, to improve extraction performance. This option has the highest latency.
Attribution
The Attribution setting defines the method for attributing model predictions to their references in the document.
The available options are:
- Rules-based - A low-latency option that uses rules and heuristics to match the correct spans on a page to the predicted values from the model. It sacrifices performance in terms of successful attributions compared to the model-based option.
- Model-based - The best-performing option, with higher latency. It uses an additional LLM call to match the predicted values to the correct spans on the page, as these values can often be repeated in different parts of the page. This option is Gemini-based.
Overrides
The Overrides setting enforces overrides to the model configuration, to apply advanced developer settings. Enter the overrides in JSON format in the JSON editor. The editor validates the JSON and shows a Valid label when the content is valid.
The Overrides setting might not be available for your organization. To request access, contact your account manager.
